Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer?

Welcome to my Personal Page! The Sunsuper Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research (WAIMR), is a cycling journey throughout the scenic countryside of Western Australia that Í'm embarking on to fight cancer. It will be a challenge in a number of ways, but with my bike, my helmet, and your generosity, a real impact will be made!

I am dedicating my participation in this event to the memory of my mother, Phyllis Mahony, who died in 2008 after a 28 year battle with breast cancer and its complications.

In the 1940's Phyllis had consulted her GP because she had detected a lump in her breast. The doctor sent her away with a flea in her ear because it was war time and he had more important things to worry about than a woman's vanity about the shape of her breasts.

A rather timid person, Phyllis did n't mention the lump again to any doctor she saw for fear of being ridiculed ... until about forty years later when it had developed into a weeping sore.

A radical mastectomy and years of chemo and hormone therapy followed. After twentyeight years from being first diagnosed, she finally gave up the fight.

Like her mother, my sister, Anne, has now been diagnosed and is being treated for breast cancer.

If my efforts can raise funds to enable a cure for breast cancer to be found, or even just improve the treatment for it, I will be satisfied.

Funds raised in The Sunsuper Ride to Conquer Cancer will support groundbreaking, critical cancer research being undertaken at WAIMR, Western Australia's premier adult medical research institute, investigating the genetic and environmental causes of a range of diseases, including breast and prostate cancer.

Your donation will be paid directly into a WAIMR bank account, so funds will be available for its immediate use. There will be no need to wait until the event is over for the presentation of a big cardboard cheque.

WAIMR is registered with the Australian Taxation Office as a Deductible Gift Recipient, so everyone who donates $2 or more will receive a Tax Receipt.

Thank you in advance for your help.

The Margaret River Community Challenge
I participated in the Margaret River Community Challenge yesterday (10/3) and it sure was a challenge. I did the 60km distance. The course had some steep hilly parts and where it was not hilly there were long gentle slopes hammered by a strong cross breeze. At the end of the ride I was absolutely worn out. I surprised myself though by recovering quickly. After a few stretches, a rest and a bit of a walk around I had recovered. Perhaps not quite to the point where I was prepared to start the course again ... but recovered none the less.
The ride was organised by Bicycling Western Australia (bwa.org.au). Their next event for the likes of me is the Rockingham Community Challenge on 26th April. Why don't you have a go? Registration opens on 12th March. Go to their website and check it out.
