Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer?
Welcome to my Personal Page! The Sunsuper Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research (WAIMR), is a cycling journey throughout the scenic countryside of Western Australia that I'm embarking on to fight cancer. It will be a challenge in a number of ways, but with my bike, my helmet, and your generosity, a real impact will be made!
Most of us either know someone who is living with cancer, survived cancer or has passed on as a result of cancer. You may even be on your own journey with cancer.
Our journey with cancer started on 7 November 2002 (our wedding anniversary), when Michelle was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma. The diagnosis was a shock at the time as Michelle had not had a primary melanoma removed. The cancer had spread and presented as a lesion on her head. For six years we did not hear from the disease until we returned from a month long vacation in Europe with Michelle finding a small lump in her breast. That was May 2008, the cancer had returned. Since then Michelle has had tumours removed from both her lungs, brain (two tumours), bowel and various other sub-cutaneous sites on her body. Michelle endured radiotherapy where she lost all her hair and refused to wear a wig. At least one of us looked good with no hair, and it was not me. She was also part of an immunotherapy trial that left her with serious side effects. Michelle's approach to the cancer has been inspirational to our family, although her comments are always "I am just being me and everything happens for a reason". She has a positive approach to her journey with melanoma, which include juicing, healthy diet, meditation, attending our inspirational support group meetings, and doting on her two grandchildren, Riley and Lucy.
This journey with melanoma has changed our family......in a good way. We have always been a very close knit family, but this has helped us appreciate those moments, such as family dinners on a Sunday evening, and the time spent with our wonderful children and beautiful grandchildren. We have not heard Michelle complain or question "why me" in the nearly ten years that she has been living with the cancer. Statistically Michelle is a survivor and I am hoping that with the money raised from this event that answers can be found that will allow more cancer patients to become survivors.
Contribute to this history-making event with a donation. Funds raised in The Sunsuper Ride to Conquer Cancer will support groundbreaking, critical cancer research being undertaken at the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research, Western Australia's premier adult medical research institute, investigating the genetic and environmental causes of a range of diseases.
Thank you in advance for your help.
