AN EPIC RIDE TO CONQUER CANCER
|
Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer
Welcome to my Personal Page! The Sunsuper Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research (WAIMR) in the quest for improving cancer diagnosis, treatment and care.
I was motivated to enter this event by Abby Basson who died of Ewing's Sarcoma last year at the age of 19. She was determined to support sarcoma research and awareness, and specifically start a PhD scholarship in the field of sarcoma research. A team of us are riding under the "Sock it to Sarcoma banner" wearing the appropriate accessories!
Having been way too close to a sarcoma (in my case a high grade leiomyosarcoma in my lower leg), I started cycling for rehabilitation during chemotherapy and it helped enormously. Although I can no longer run with the same fluency as before the limb-salvage surgery, I can now cycle and walk. Indeed, I recently trekked with my two teenagers to Everest Base Camp in celebration!
Cancer has taken its toll on family members of my parents' generation, although fortunately not my parents. Uncles and aunts on both sides succumbed to cancers such as lung cancer and melanoma. Sadly, a number of dear friends have also lost their battles to this disease including sarcoma.
Getting on board with the Sock it to Sarcoma team will definitely aid Abby's vision to make a difference in the outcomes for those with this cancer.
Funds raised in The Sunsuper Ride to Conquer Cancer will support groundbreaking sarcoma research to be undertaken through the Hollywood Private Hospital Research Foundation, Sock it to Sarcoma and the Abby Basson Memorial PhD Scholarship in association with the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research and UWA.
Thank you in advance for your help and hope to see you on the ride.
