Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer?

Welcome to my Personal Page! The Sunsuper Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research (WAIMR), is a cycling journey throughout the scenic countryside of Western Australia that Í'm embarking on to fight cancer. It will be a challenge in a number of ways, but with my bike, my helmet, and your generosity, a real impact will be made!

I am dedicating my participation in this event to the memory of my mother, Phyllis Mahony, who died in 2008 after a 28 year battle with breast cancer and its complications.

In the 1940's Phyllis had consulted her GP because she had detected a lump in her breast. The doctor sent her away with a flea in her ear because it was war time and he had more important things to worry about than a woman's vanity about the shape of her breasts.

A rather timid person, Phyllis did n't mention the lump again to any doctor she saw for fear of being ridiculed ... until about forty years later when it had developed into a weeping sore.

A radical mastectomy and years of chemo and hormone therapy followed. After twentyeight years from being first diagnosed, she finally gave up the fight.

Like her mother, my sister, Anne, has now been diagnosed and is being treated for breast cancer.

If my efforts can raise funds to enable a cure for breast cancer to be found, or even just improve the treatment for it, I will be satisfied.

Funds raised in The Sunsuper Ride to Conquer Cancer will support groundbreaking, critical cancer research being undertaken at WAIMR, Western Australia's premier adult medical research institute, investigating the genetic and environmental causes of a range of diseases, including breast and prostate cancer.

Your donation will be paid directly into a WAIMR bank account, so funds will be available for its immediate use. There will be no need to wait until the event is over for the presentation of a big cardboard cheque.

WAIMR is registered with the Australian Taxation Office as a Deductible Gift Recipient, so everyone who donates $2 or more will receive a Tax Receipt.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Fundraising curtailed ... again!
In falling off my bike nearly four weeks ago I twisted my left knee. Until yesterday I thought I was recovering quite nicely; until I walked about 5 or 6 kilometres and the soreness flared up again. So no walking any great distance for a while longer. As a consequence no door knocking to raise any more funds for a while, which is rather annoying and disheartening.

No fundraising today
I did a bit of door knocking yesterday and raised nearly $500 but by the end of the day I had lost my voice ... laryngitis.
So no fundraising today. It's a bit pointless going out to ask people for a donation if you don't have a voice to speak with ... so fundraising has been put off for a while. I should be OK again by next week.
In the meantime, if anyone reads this and can do a bit without me speaking to them, click on the big green button above and make a donation.

Target adjusted ... again! Now $20,000
We reached the mid-August target of $15,000 yesterday (29/6) which is about seven weeks ahead of schedule. WOW!
I took just eleven weeks.
So let's re-set the target again. Let's try for $20,000 in eleven weeks. That will be about the middle of September.
I must admit that I have a target of $25,000 in the back of my mind ... but let's get to $20,000 first. That will be quite an achievement if we can do that.

Target adjusted to $15,000
I've adjusted my target to $15,000 today. I'm perhaps a bit premature but I only have $329 to get to the $10,000 target and, with a bit of luck and help, I'll do that by the end of this week.

Training continues as does fundraising
Unfortunately the Rockingham Community Challenge Ride organised by Bicycling WA (BWA) has been cancelled due to a lack of cooperation by the local Shire Council. The next BWA ride will be in the Kalamunda area towards the end of May. In the meantime I have joined the boys and girls at Armadale Cycles on their Saturday morning rides. They are a friendly bunch of people and provide a good range of rides to choose from. I tried the 60km ride this morning. Although I didn't manage to keep up (I lost it on the slight undulations, they could hardly be called 'hills'). I enjoyed the ride none the less and look forward to the next one.
Fundraising is going gang busters with lots of supporters and almost $10,000 raised to date. The present target is for the middle of May. Once the $10,000 has been reached I'll look at $15,000 by the middle of August. Perhaps I can even think about $20,000 by October. But let's not get ahead of ourselves ... one step at a time.
Of course none of this could be achieved with out the donations from all of the people who agree with the aim of our ride and what we are trying to achieve. My heartfelt thanks to all of you.

My 70th Birthday Ride
I rode my 100 miles (160.9kms) yesterday. I started at 5am and rode south down the Freeway Bike Path to the end and then another 20km on the Forrest Highway and return giving me a total of 161.9kms. The last 30kms were the hardest but I made it home by 1.25pm with about an hour and a half in resting periods along the way.

The Margaret River Community Challenge
I participated in the Margaret River Community Challenge yesterday (10/3) and it sure was a challenge. I did the 60km distance. The course had some steep hilly parts and where it was not hilly there were long gentle slopes hammered by a strong cross breeze. At the end of the ride I was absolutely worn out. I surprised myself though by recovering quickly. After a few stretches, a rest and a bit of a walk around I had recovered. Perhaps not quite to the point where I was prepared to start the course again ... but recovered none the less.
The ride was organised by Bicycling Western Australia (bwa.org.au). Their next event for the likes of me is the Rockingham Community Challenge on 26th April. Why don't you have a go? Registration opens on 12th March. Go to their website and check it out.

Easter Target Reached Already
Wow!!
Here it is, only the 14th February and we've reached our Easter target already!
We'll have to review our target again - let's make it $10,000 by the middle of May.
Is that being a bit ambitious do you think? With somewhere like 43,000 people dying of cancer in Australia in 2011 and another 115,000 cases being diagnosed, a cure for cancer must be considered by everyone to be a good cause.
So let's give it a go! We just might be able to provide the where-with-all to save some lives.

Initial Target Reached
Today we reached our initial target of $3200 ... in fact we went $107 over budget. Fantastic!!
I've sent all of my donors a newsletter announcing, among other things, a new target of $6,500 to be reached by Easter. And we're already half way there!

Review of target soon
Due to the outstanding generosity of the people that I have approached I will soon have to review my target. It is only the first week of December and I already have had $2,185 donated. With the ride not being until October next year there is plenty of time for more people to participate by making a donation. Could we think of $6,400?

I've started training.
I rode to Mandurah and back on Sunday. 132km round trip. I did it mainly to see if I could last the distance. It was n't a real problem. I left home about 7 am, had a couple of 20 minute breaks along the way and arrived back home about 1pm. The ride was n't exactly hard but I knew that I had put in a good effort by the time I got home.
All I need to do now is have the stamina to do the same thing two days in a row.
I ride to the gym in Riverton 3 days a week which is about 18.5 k's each way and with a hour's workout in between. That should hold me in good stead for this time next year.
