In May 2009, at just 17, Abbie Basson was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic Ewings sarcoma, originating in her pelvis. She went through eight months of intense chemotherapy and radiation, but after only six months in remission and life back to normal, the cancer reappeared around her body. She joined an IGFR trial, endured both high and low grade radiation to her head and more chemo, until finally there were no more options. Throughout, she still thought of others: becoming a patient mentor in CanTeen; advocating for specialised treatment units for young adults and adolescents with cancer, and planning to raise awareness and funds in WA for medical research into sarcoma. She was never anything but positive: the glass was always half-full and never half-empty. Her smile would light up a room and she took great pleasure in having the most beautifully painted fingernails, after she no longer had hair to care for. Above all, she was determined to make a difference by improving outcomes for other sarcoma patients. She passed away in August 2011, three weeks after her twentieth birthday.
Our team name, Sock it to Sarcoma comes from Abbies idea to create an identity for fundraising to support sarcoma research. She wrote:
Like the red nose for red nose day, the pink ribbon and purple bra for breast awareness and the bandanna for CanTeen, my idea is to have odd socks as the identifier. For some people who get sarcomas, and their primary tumour is in their leg, there is a possibility that they will have to have it amputated and thus they really only need one sock!! (It also goes the same for arms and gloves). It would be great to ultimately help reduce this being the case as treatments for sarcomas get more advanced. But also, odd socks is an easy thing that every person can take part in to show their support for sarcoma research. And with greater sarcoma awareness (before I was diagnosed I had never even heard of a sarcoma!!) and the Western Australian publics support, we can all Sock it to Sarcoma and fight them!! Therefore, in honour of this inspirational young woman, our team uniform includes odd socks!
Our mission and motivation behind taking part in this ride is to make Abbies vision become a reality. Please join us or dig deep and, by donating, help us to make this happen!! THANK YOU in advance for supporting team Sock it to Sarcoma!!
